UG hosts undergraduate research symposium 2018

On August 28, 2018, the Office for Undergraduate Research (OUR) and several organisations came together to host an undergraduate research symposium under the theme ‘Undergraduate Research: Engagement in National Development’. The symposium presented a unique opportunity for students at Turkeyen and Tain to interact with the participating organisations and gain knowledge about their research agenda with regards to national development.

Students gained insights into themes including Research Development in Life Sciences and Bridging the Disciplines, exploring topics such as:

• Agriculture: Guyana’s pathway to a green economy
• What can I do for my final-year project?
• Research opportunities at GLDA within the livestock industry
• Education for sustainable development: Research agenda
• Doing undergraduate research in computing
• The health research agenda
• Focusing on the green economy

Key speakers included Dr. William Adu-Krow, PAHO/WHO Guyana Country Office Representative; Dr. Gyanpriya Maharaj, Director, Centre for the Study of Biological Diversity (Turkeyen Campus); Dr. Thomas Singh, Senior Lecturer, Department of Economics (Turkeyen Campus); Mr. David Fredericks, Senior Research Scientist, NAREI; Mr. Selwyn Anthony, Senior Livestock Officer, GLDA; Mr. Phillip DaSilva, Assistant Director, UGBC; and Mr. Lenandlar Singh, Senior Lecturer, Department of Computer Science, Turkeyen Campus.
